Business Environment Reinventing Performance Management†Free Samples

Question: Talk about the Reinventing Performance Management. Answer: Presentation The presentation of some random association is the way in to its prosperity or disappointment. An association that does next to no in ensuring that exhibition of the workers is helpful for the entire association winds up in a disadvantageous position. Representatives are extraordinary. Despite the fact that there are representatives who have the enthusiasm of their associations on the most fundamental level, there are representatives who couldn't care less on occasion and probably won't perform well in the working environment until they are pushed or compelled to do as such. Various associations have various techniques that they utilize with regards to advancing the presentation of the workers. Deloitte is a genuine case of associations that have understood that presentation in an association is a significant perspective that ought not be overlooked. The paper will be taking a gander at the four center inquiries that uncover themselves subsequent to experiencing the contextual invest igation of Deloitte and its methods of overseeing execution. Article rundown Deloitte has seen the need to ensure that exhibition at the association is taken to a more significant level. The association has seen that perhaps the most ideal ways is to rehash the manner in which the administration of execution is led inside the association. It is smarter to understand that when a group of representatives meets up, they are probably going to deliver preferable outcomes over when a worker works independently (Karatepe 2010). In any case, with regards to overseeing execution, the workers are measured at an individual level. The present methodology utilized by Deloitte to accomplish an elite has not been compelling and it is hence that the association has seen the need to rethink its procedures undoubtedly. Deloitte has utilized one of the one of a kind techniques for dealing with the presentation of the workers. As indicated by the administration, the technique is a lot easier and takes a gander at the requirements of both the association and the workers. It likewise obliges all workers (Hancock, J; Allen, D; Bosco, F; McDaniel, K Pierce, C, 2013). The technique doesn't just glance at the enthusiasm of the association, it additionally ensures that in spite of the representatives being pushed to performing better, there is a constant learning process that makes the workers advantage also. The framework that Deloitte has been utilizing in overseeing execution is one of the methodologies that are utilized by numerous associations from various pieces of the world. Numerous associations rate the exhibition of their representatives at a yearly period. Be that as it may, Deloitte has been doing it in an alternate manner (Metcalfe, A; Margaret, B; Mariathasan, J Chiara, S, 2012). Other than rating the representatives toward the finish of a year, every worker is allotted a guide who helps the worker in realizing the most ideal approach to enhance the regions that were performed inadequately. In any case, the association has understood that overseeing execution once in a year is obsolete. The advanced business world is changing and intensity has been taken to a more elevated level (Hanan, 2010) To ensure that Deloitte becomes more acquainted with about what inspires the representatives to perform better, an examination was led. The exploration demonstrated that individuals are roused contrastingly to performing better. For instance, the three gatherings of representatives that were studied gave various reasons why they perform better. There are workers who accepted that the strategic the organization is a motivation to them and propels them in their day by day exercises. There are the individuals who were inspired by the dedication of their colleagues at the working environment and there are the individuals who connected their elite with the opportunity that is in the working environment. Deloitte understood that the main way that it would have dealt with the exhibition of its workers is by knowing the presentation of every representative at an individual level (Goetsch, D Davis, S, 2014). At the working environment, there are various kinds of representatives. A few representatives are bad with regards to achieving undertakings. Such representatives may take cover behind the accomplishment of others and hope to be remunerated when others are being compensated. It is thus that it is imperative to realize how every single representative performs. With such information, it turns out to be anything but difficult to just reward the individuals who merit it as opposed to commonly remunerating all workers (Mone, M London, M, 2014). Straightforwardness is a prudence that ought to be held beyond a reasonable doubt by any representative. Be that as it may, the examination understood that straightforwardness doesn't just accompany the presentation of a workplace that is missing of physical dividers. The investigation shows that the exhibition of the representatives can't be directed by security. An exploration that was done in an emergency clinic recognized that the parental figures who took care of patients in the open were less profitable contrasted with the guardians who took care of their patients in encased regions. Such meant that exhibition isn't about straightforwardness yet about a people will (Evans, J Lindsay, J, 2013). The administration would have believed that wiping out physical boundaries would have prompted workers performing better yet that was not the situation. One hypothesis behind the investigation is that the physical insurance of a workplace has its favorable circumstances. To begin with, the representative is offered time to explore. An examination gives one an outline that is valuable during the time spent tackling the issue. The subsequent preferred position is the core interest. When there are no interferences, one will in general spotlight on the errand ahead more than if there were interferences. At the point when individuals cooperate and are required to deal with singular undertakings, it is critical to give them enough time for themselves in order to ensure that they concentrate consequently produce results that are gainful. Advanced change has additionally been named as one of the manners in which that can be utilized to improve and oversee execution (Carter, M, Armenakis, A, Feild, H and Mossholder, K, 2013). Innovation can be used to administer and quantify that physical exhibition of the representatives. Simultaneously, it tends to be utilized in estimating the yield and that may affect execution the executives. Taking a gander at the examination, there are a ton of inquiries that develop. Notwithstanding, just four center inquiries will be drawn from the content. The four inquiries are as per the following; What is the connection among administration and execution the board? What is the most ideal approach to oversee execution? What are a portion of the variables that influence the exhibition of an association? Does the initiative of an association have consequences for the exhibition of the workers? The effect of drawing in administration on execution, perspectives to work and prosperity at work: A longitudinal report Rundown The initiative of any organization has a ton to do with the presentation of the establishment. For a long time, various pioneers have utilized distinctive authority styles and that has had consequences for the exhibition of the workers in various manners. The prosperity of the staff and their disposition is directed by the authority style that is utilized in an association (Metcalfe, A; Margaret, B; Mariathasan, J Chiara, S, 2012). To demonstrate the hypothesis that relates initiative and execution, an exploration was led. The examination was planned for taking a gander at various sorts of authorities and the impacts they have on the workers exhibitions. A portion of the fields of initiative that were given a lot of consideration were administration culture and authorities abilities. They were to be utilized to perceive how powerful they are with regards to authoritative execution. The outcomes were that administration quality has a great deal of impacts on the staff (Atmojo, 2015). Despite the fact that not legitimately, the administration of an association affects the workers exhibitions. Quality authority persuaded the workers, caused them to feel as a vital part of the association and gave them an inspirational mentality towards the association and initiative henceforth propelling them to perform better. The subject of the article is pertinent to the primary article since the two of them tackle a similar issue; execution the executives. Overseeing Performance: A Practical Perspective on Managing Employee Performance Rundown Now and again, it very well may be trying to oversee representatives with the point of profiting them and the association that they work for. The duty is the vast majority of the occasions seen as an assignment of the administrator. It is significant for any association to consider its to be as just not workers but rather as additionally a venture. In light of that, the association gets the opportunity to welcome the representatives subsequently treating them with pride and regard. Simply the manner in which an association drafts a methodology and distributes assets to ensure that the technique is successful, that is a similar way that an association should put aside cash in order to ensure that various strategies are utilized so as to propel the representatives to perform viably (Mike, J Mark, S, 2011). There are various instruments and strategies that are utilized by associations to oversee execution. This article takes a gander at the most useful strategies since certain techniques are better when recorded however too difficult to even think about implementing. A portion of the techniques concentrated on are helpful for the associations and furthermore workers. Examinations, rewards, preparing, access to assets, objective setting, training, and criticisms are a portion of the strategies utilized (Mike, J Mark, S, 2011). Note that all the strategies are related with authority in some random association since the nonattendance of initiative would imply that there is nobody to execute them. The article is identified with the primary article since it responds to a significant inquiry from the fundamental article. Variables influencing execution of medical clinic nurture in Riyadh Region, Saudi Arabia Outline Simply the path there are techniques to propel the workers to perform better, the case is a similar with regards to restrictions (Hanan, 2010). There are factors that influence the exhibition of the workers in an association. One of the variables that are

Mania is a facet of  type I bipolar disorder in which the mood state is abnormally heightened and accompanied by hyperactivity and a reduced need for sleep.?? By contrast, hypomania (often described as mania-light) is a type II bipolar disorder  which neither has the range nor severity of symptoms that classic mania has. If left untreated, bipolar mania can spin out the control and affect your ability to function on a daily basis. Recognizing the symptoms is the first step toward seeking the appropriate treatment and care. Verywell / Nusha Ashjaee Symptoms The appearance of one or two symptoms of mania doesnt necessarily mean that you have bipolar disorder. There may be other explanations for your sudden change in mood, including an emotional trauma, a brain injury, a drug reaction, or an undiagnosed anxiety disorder. Broadly speaking, bipolar mania can be characterized by some or all of the following features: Mood changes??Sudden changes in energy and activitySpeech disruptionsImpaired judgmentChanges in thought patternsDevelopment of psychosis?? You wouldnt necessarily have all of these features to be diagnosed as manic or hypomanic. Instead, your doctor would review your symptoms and see if they meet the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) issued by the American Psychiatric Association. If you are experiencing manic symptoms that are impairing your ability to function, find a mental health professional in your area able to diagnose your symptoms and offer treatment, if needed. You can ask your family doctor for a referral or contact the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) hotline at 800-950-NAMI from Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Diagnosis According to the DSM, bipolar mania can be diagnosed if you experience at least three of the following symptoms for no less than a week: Reduced need for sleep??Increased rate of speechFlight of ideasBeing easily distracted??High self-esteemAn increased interest in goal-oriented activitiesPsychomotor agitation (such as pacing or hand-wringing)An increased pursuit of risky or dangerous activities?? To better understand the nature of these symptoms, you would need to explore the root behaviors that characterize bipolar mania. Mood Changes Mood changes are characterized by a sudden burst of activity, often described as being as being outsized or larger than life. These changes would be long-lasting rather than transient and be uncharacteristic of your natural mood state. Symptoms may include: Extreme excitabilityAn expansive moodGrandiosity and imperiousness??Sudden shifts to extreme irritability, hostility, or even anger Changes in Energy It is one thing to have a sudden rush of energy; it is an another when the energy is relentless, prolonged, and overwhelming. As with mood changes, the sudden upshot of energy would not be considered normal and can switch off as quickly as it was switched on. Symptoms may include: A decreased need for sleep with little apparent fatigueA sudden increase in goal-oriented activities?? (such as a project that needs to be done to the exclusion of other activities)Restlessness and an inability to remain stillPersistent and often purposeless movement Speech Disruptions Speech disruptions are probably the easiest way to recognize a manic episode. A person may be described as having a motor mouth and be difficult or even impossible to interrupt. Speech disruptions may include: Rapid, pressured speech (as if you cannot get enough words in)??Incoherent speech (often described as rambling and persistent)Clang associations (a serious condition in which words that sound similar are grouped together even if they don’t make any sense)?? Impaired Judgment Impaired judgment can often be missed by casual observers who may dismiss the behavior as either a momentary lapse or a sudden burst of generosity, passion, daring, or goodwill. At times, the behavior may be risky?? , hurtful,  or even dangerous. Example include: Inappropriate humor and brash behaviorExtreme impulsiveness?? (including gambling and risk-taking)An apparent lack of insight into the consequences of an actionReckless and extravagant spending (including the lavishing of gifts on friends, casual acquaintances, and even strangers)Hypersexuality  and sexually provocative behaviors?? Changes in Thought Patterns Changes in thought patterns are easily spotted by those with whom the person has regular interactions. They may manifest as a sudden burst of creative insight or appear fractured and nonsensical. Example include: Enhanced creativity or inventiveness (often perceived as a breakthrough or an epiphany)Flight of ideas (a rapid succession of thoughts that shoot from one idea to the next)??Racing thoughts (a rapid stream of thought, often repetitive)An increased focus on religion or religious activity??Disorientation or disjointed thinking Psychosis Psychosis is a severe manifestation of bipolar disorder which can affect people in a manic or depressive mood state. Psychosis is defined as a break from reality which typically requires medical treatment and hospitalization. It is not a feature one would expect to see in a hypomanic phase. Symptoms may include: Hallucinations (hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, or feeling things that are not real)Delusions (believing things that are not real)??Paranoia (fearing things that are not real) The symptoms of psychosis tend to match the mood state. If it occurs during a manic phase, you may believe you have special powers?? and engage in reckless behaviors. If bipolar psychosis occurs during a depressive episode, you may believe that someone is out to harm you.

The Criminal Justice System Essay examples - 1067 Words

The Criminal Justice System After speaking with several different individuals, I think the reason I chose to use the responses and thoughts of Alissa C. in my paper is because she had straight yes and no answers with thoughtful explanations, and she had very few I dont know or maybe type answers. Alissa C. seemed genuinely concerned about the state of the criminal justice system and, obviously, had given it a great deal of thought over time. I advised Alissa C. that my inquiry would cover the issues of police, the court system and our correctional system. As an afterthought, I also told her I would like her thoughts on gun control. I asked her if she felt our court system was sufficient. She appeared a bit agitated over that question and indicated that the courts work as well as the laws allow. She stated her knowledge of the court system was as follows: a criminal commits a crime, the criminal gets arrested, the criminal obtains a lawyer or is assigned a public defender, the case is prepared for trial by lawyers researching case law, etc., case is presented to a judge and jury, jury decides the issues and renders a verdict. Alissa C. was adamant that if a person commits a crime that they should be punished for the extent of the crime. Do you think she has one of those things – inside her?† â€Å"I guess so. I saw her aura, and yuck, I never want to see it again. She used to be a kind of deep bronzy-green, but now she’s muddy brown with black lightning zigzagging all through. I don’t know if that means one of those things was inside her, but she sure didn’t mind cuddling up to them!† Bonnie shuddered. â€Å"Okay,† Meredith said soothingly. â€Å"I know what I would say if I had to make a guess – and if you’re going to be sick, I’ll stop.† Bonnie gulped. â€Å"I’m all right. But we’re seriously going to Isobel Saitou’s house?† â€Å"We’re very seriously going there. As a matter of fact, we’re almost there. Let’s just brush our hair, take a few deep breaths, and get it over with. How well do you know her?† â€Å"Well, she’s smart. We didn’t have any classes together. But we both got out of athletics at the same time – she had a jumpy heart or something, and I used to get that terrible asthma†¦.† â€Å"From any exertion except dancing, which you could keep up all night,† Meredith said dryly. â€Å"I don’t know her very well at all. What’s she like?† â€Å"Well, nice. Looks a bit like you, except Asian. Shorter than you – Elena’s height, but skinnier. Sort of pretty. A little shy – the quiet type, you know. Sort of hard to get to know. And†¦nice.† â€Å"Shy and quiet and nice sounds good to me.† â€Å"Me, too,† Bonnie said, pressing her sweaty hands together between her knees. What sounded even better, she thought, was for Isobel to be not at home. However, there were several cars parked in front of the Saitou house. Bonnie and Meredith knocked on the door hesitantly, mindful of what had happened the last time they had done this. It was Jim Bryce who answered, a tall, lanky boy who hadn’t filled out yet and stooped a bit. What Bonnie found amazing was the change in his face as he recognized Meredith. When he’d answered he’d looked awful; his face white under a medium tan, his body somehow crumpled. When he saw Meredith, some of the color came to his cheeks and he seemed to†¦well, to smooth out like a piece of paper. He stood taller. Meredith didn’t say a word. She just stepped forward and put her arms around him. He clutched at her as if he was afraid she’d run away, and buried his face in her dark hair. â€Å"Meredith.† â€Å"Just breathe, Jim. Breathe.† â€Å"You don’t know what it’s been like. My parents left because my great-grandpa’s really sick – I think he’s dying. And then Tami – Tami – â€Å" â€Å"Tell me slowly. And keep breathing.† â€Å"She threw knives, Meredith. Butcher knives. She got me in the leg here.† Jim plucked at his jeans to show a small slit of a hole in the fabric over the lower part of one thigh. â€Å"Have you had a tetanus shot recently?† Meredith was at her most efficient. â€Å"No, but it’s not really a big cut. It’s a puncture wound, mainly.† â€Å"Those are exactly the kind that are most dangerous. You need to call Dr. Alpert right away.† Old Dr. Alpert was an institution in Fell’s Church: a doctor who even made house calls, in a country where carrying around a little black bag and stethoscope was pretty much unheard-of behavior. â€Å"Ican’t . I can’t leave†¦.† Jim jerked his head backward toward the interior of the house as if he couldn’t bring himself to say a name. Bonnie tugged at Meredith’s sleeve. â€Å"I have a very bad feeling about this,† she hissed. Meredith turned back to Jim. â€Å"You mean Isobel? Where areher parents?† â€Å"Isa-chan, I mean Isobel, I just call her Isa-chan, you know†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"It’s all right,† said Meredith. â€Å"Just say what comes naturally. Go on.† â€Å"Well, Isa-chan only has her grandma, and Grandma Saitou doesn’t even come downstairs much. I made her lunch a while ago and she thought I was – Isobel’s father. She gets†¦confused.† Meredith glanced at Bonnie, and said, â€Å"And Isobel? Is she confused, too?† Jim shut his eyes, looking utterly miserable. â€Å"I wish you’d go in and, well, just talk to her.† Bonnie’s bad feeling was only getting worse. She really couldn’t stand another scare like the one at Caroline’s house – and she certainly didn’t have the strength to Call again, even if Damon weren’t in a hurry to get somewhere. But Meredith knew all this, and Meredith was giving her the sort of look that couldn’t be denied. You read "The Return: Nightfall Chapter 20" in category "Essay examples" It also promised that Meredith would protect Bonnie, no matter what. â€Å"Is she hurting anybody? Isobel?† Bonnie heard herself ask as they crossed through the kitchen and toward a bedroom at the end of the hallway. She could hardly hear Jim’s whispered, â€Å"Yeah.† And then, as Bonnie groaned internally, he added, â€Å"Herself.† Isobel’s room was just what you’d expect from a quiet and studious girl. At least one side was. The other side looked as if a tidal wave had picked everything up and thrown it down again randomly. Isobel was sitting in the middle of this mess like a spider on a web. But that wasn’t what made Bonnie’s gut churn. It was what Isobel was doing. She had laid out beside her what looked a lot like Mrs. Flowers’ kit for cleaning out wounds, but she wasn’t healing anything. She was piercing herself. She had already done her lip, her nose, one eyebrow, and her ears, many times. Blood was dripping from all these places, dripping and falling onto the unmade sheets of her bed. Bonnie saw all that as Isobel looked up at them with a frown, except that the frown was only half there. On the pierced side, the eyebrow didn’t move at all. Her aura was shattered orange with black lashings through it. Bonnie knew, all at once, that she was going to be sick. She knew it with the deep knowledge that overcame all embarrassment and which sent her flying to a wastebasket she didn’t even remember seeing. Thank God, it had a white plastic bag lining it, she thought, and then she was completely occupied for a few minutes. Her ears recorded a voice, even as she was thinking she was glad she hadn’t had lunch. â€Å"My God,are you crazy ? Isobel, what have you done to yourself? Don’t you know the kind of infections you can get†¦the veins you can hit†¦the muscles you can paralyze†¦? I think you’ve already pierced the muscle in your eyebrow – and you shouldn’t still be bleeding unless you’ve hit veins or arteries.† Bonnie retched dryly into the wastebasket, and spat. And just then she heard a meaty thud. She looked up, half knowing what she would see. But it still was a shock. Meredith was doubled over from what must have been a punch in the stomach. The next thing Bonnie knew, she was beside Meredith. â€Å"Oh, my God, did shestab you?† A stab wound†¦deep enough into the abdomen†¦ Meredith clearly couldn’t get her breath. From somewhere a bit of advice from her sister Mary, the nurse, floated into Bonnie’s mind. Bonnie pounded with both fists on Meredith’s back, and suddenly Meredith took a huge gulp of air. â€Å"Thanks,† she was saying weakly, but Bonnie was already dragging her away, away from the laughing Isobel and a collection of the world’s longest nails and the rubbing alcohol and other things that she had on a breakfast tray beside her. Bonnie got to the door and almost collided with Jim, who had a wet washcloth in his hand. For her, she supposed. Or maybe for Isobel. All Bonnie was interested in was making Meredith pull up her top to make absolutely, positively sure that there were no holes in her. â€Å"I got it – out of her hand – before she punched me,† Meredith said, still breathing painfully as Bonnie anxiously scanned the area above her low-rise jeans. â€Å"I’ll have a bruise, that’s all.† â€Å"She hit you, too?† Jim said in dismay. Except that he didn’t say it. He whispered it. You poor guy, Bonnie thought, finally satisfied that Meredith wasn’t perforated. What with Caroline and your sister Tami and your girlfriend, you don’t have the first idea of what’s going on. How could you? And if we told you, you’d just think we were two more crazy girls. â€Å"Jimmy, youhave to call Dr. Alpert right away, and then I think they’re going to have to go to the hospital in Ridgemont. Isobel’s already done permanent damage to herself – God knows how much. All those piercings are almost certainly going to be infected. When did she start this?† â€Å"Um, well†¦she first started acting weird after Caroline came to see her.† â€Å"Caroline!† Bonnie blurted, confused. â€Å"Was she crawling?† Jim gave her a look. â€Å"Huh?† â€Å"Never mind Bonnie; she was joking,† Meredith said easily. â€Å"Jimmy, you don’t have to tell us about Caroline if you don’t want to. We – well, we know she was over at your house.† â€Å"Doeseverybody know?† Jim asked miserably. â€Å"No. Just Matt, and he only told us so that somebody could go check on your little sister.† Jim looked guilty and stricken at once. The words poured out of him as if they’d been bottled up and now the cork was out of the bottle. â€Å"I don’t know what’s going on anymore. All I can tell you is what happened. It was a couple days ago – late evening,† Jim said. â€Å"Caroline came over, and – I mean, I never even had a crush on her. It’s like, sure, she’s good-looking, and my parents were away and all, but I never thought I was the kind of guy†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"Never mind that now. Just tell us about Caroline and Isobel.† â€Å"Well, Caroline came over wearing this outfit that was – well, the top was practically transparent. And she just – she said, did I want to dance and it was, like, slow dancing and she – she, like, seduced me. That’s the truth. And the next morning she left – just about the time Matt came. That was the day before yesterday. And then I noticed Tami acting – crazy. Nothing I could do would stop her. And then I got a phone call from Isa-chan and – I’ve never heard her so hysterical. Caroline must have gone straight from my house to her house. Isa-chan said she was going to kill herself. And so I ran over here. I had to get away from Tami anyway because me being there at home just seemed to make it worse.† Bonnie looked at Meredith and knew that they were both thinking the same thing:and somewhere in there, both Caroline and Tami propositioned Matt, too. â€Å"Caroline must have told her everything.† Jim gulped. â€Å"Isa-chan and I haven’t – we were waiting, you know? But all Isa-chan would say to me was that I was going to be sorry. ;;You’ll be sorry; just wait and see,’ over and over and over. And, God, Iam sorry.† â€Å"Well, now you can stop being sorry and start calling the doctor. Rightnow , Jimmy.† Meredith gave him a swat on the behind. â€Å"And then you need to call your parents. Don’t give me those big brown puppy-dog eyes. You’re over eighteen; I don’t know what they can do to you for leaving Tami alone all this time.† â€Å"But – â€Å" â€Å"But me no buts. Imean it, Jimmy.† Then she did what Bonnie knew she would, but was dreading. She approached Isobel again. Isobel’s head was down; she was pinching her navel with one hand. In the other, she held a long, shining nail. Before Meredith could even speak, Isobel said, â€Å"So you’re in on it, too. I heard the way you called him  ¡Ã‚ ®Jimmy.’ You’re all trying to take him away from me. All you bitches are trying to hurt me.Yurusenai! Zettai yurusenai! â€Å" â€Å"Isobel! Don’t! Can’t you see that you’re hurtingyourself ?† â€Å"I’m only hurting myself to take away the pain. You’re the one who’s really doing it, you know. You’re pricking me with needles inside.† Bonnie jumped inside her own skin, but not just because Isobel suddenly gave a vicious thrust of the nail. She felt heat sweep up into her cheeks. Her heart began to pound even faster than it was already going. Trying to keep one eye on Meredith, she pulled her mobile phone out of her back pocket where she’d stashed it after the visit to Caroline’s house. Still with half her attention on Meredith, she went on the Internet and rapidly entered just two search words. Then, as she made a couple of selections from her hits, she realized that she could never absorb all the information in a week, much less a few minutes. But at least she had a start. Just now, Meredith was backing away from Isobel. She put her mouth close to Bonnie’s ear and whispered, â€Å"I think we’re just antagonizing her. Did you get a good look at her aura?† Bonnie nodded. â€Å"Then we probably should leave the room, at least.† Bonnie nodded again. â€Å"Were you trying to call Matt and Elena?† Meredith was eyeing the mobile phone. Bonnie shook her head and turned the phone so Meredith could see her two search words. Meredith stared, then lifted dark eyes to Bonnie’s in a kind of horrified recognition. Salem witches. Nude In Western Paintings Essays - Visual Arts, Painting, Nude Art

Nude In Western Paintings The depiction of the nude female model by a male artist in oil painting has played a significant role in the western tradition over the last 500 years. The oil painting of the female nude is subject to the artist's interpretation of her form. She is affected by the artist's desire for his model, as well as his art and she is torn between the artist's inability to be both lover and painter. Hubert Damisch's "The Underneaths of Painting" helps the reader understand the importance of the male painter's imaging of the female form. By analyzing Balzac's Unknown Masterpiece, Damisch uncovers several tangents to the unique relationship between artist's and the women they create on canvas. Balzac tells a tale of the truth behind the creative process of an artist and the way he perceives his vision when finally completed in oil. Poussin is a young painter who doesn't quite understand how the concepts of desire and love will affect the perception of his model, and lover, Gilette. He soon embarks on a journey that takes him underneath the paint: "Under the paint and as its ?truth', instead and in the place of the so-called picture, the exchange assuming its last true face: a woman for a picture and a woman for what forms (or ought to) its subject. It is at this point in the picture where the subterranean, archaeological presence of the woman reveals itself, that something is given to see, something that can be spoken, that can be named, something moreover alive, delectable, a foothold for desire; in a word, something that looks at us unlike the inexpressible wall of paint that holds it captive," (Damisch 202). There are many layers of paint put on to one canvas, but the image isn't visible right away, she must grow through the brushstrokes. When the last brush of paint touches the canvas, her beauty is revealed to the eye. The artist has created his masterpiece and she can be discussed like a real woman now; she has a name, she has the personality the artist has given her which makes her come alive, she is so real that observers feel the need to touch her and she looks right back. The paint from which she came is an afterthought and because Poussin is hungry for a piece that can accomplish all this, he chooses his work over his love. Damisch utilizes Balzac's tale to define the position of the artist's heart. It is inevitable that every painter that is dedicated to his work cannot be capable of loving anything so much as the act of expressing one's self through paint. He falls in love with his creation and there can be no room for a tangible love. Here is Damisch: "...one has to choose between being a lover and a painter. Poussin will be assailed by doubt at the thought that another person could look at Gilette, and look at her as only he was allowed to see her: naked. But this doubt will soon vanish: the young man will forget his mistress, he will desire only to be a painter, he will see his art and nothing else," (Damisch 200). Poussin has not fully recognized the intensity of the connection that an artist has with his work and doesn't realize that Gilette is what's holding him back. Since he shares his love with her and his work, Poussin cannot capture true realism in the females he depicts. Although he loves her at this point and couldn't possibly think of letting anyone see Gilette, Poussin will discover that to let her pose for other artists isn't as shattering a suggestion when he creates the nude that will lend his heart solely to the act of expression. The artist will then transfer his feelings of obsession for Gilette to his work and he will be able to love no other with the same intensity that he enjoys his work. Damisch questions the role of desire in the conversion of the female model into the artist's Venus. He asks: "What of the working of desire in its relation to the desire of the other?" and then goes on to report that: "...we are amongst painters who only have eyes for painting. As far as Gilette is concerned she has no part in their commerce: she doesn't look at the painting, but sees only the painters...Poussin, while drawing her, was no doubt looking at her, but was not thinking about her...She does not say: without desiring

Gang activity editorial Essays - Crime, Criminology, Gang

Gang activity editorial Essays - Crime, Criminology, Gang Today, there is a great concern about gang activity and youth violence. Every day, we can open a newspaper or turn on the evening news and see that another child or victim was killed in gang or youth related violence. Teenage crime and violence has existed for many years. Many people have become more aware of the violence committed by today's youth because of the media coverage of the viciousness of these crimes. The public is also aware of the new breed of criminal. Juvenile gangs have existed for many years. In the past, gang members fought with fists, brass knuckles and sticks. Today's gangs have better weapons, including sophisticated automatic weapons and they are prepared to use these weapons. The gangs usually come from the poorer areas of the inner cities, which was the case for even the earliest known gangs. Gangs and youth violence has always existed, but the increased interest and concern in their activities has emerged because of the increasing violence and death toll on our youth. New York City was the first city to have serious problems with gang- related activity because it was the first stop for many new immigrants entering the United States. Search of a better way of life immigrants created gangs. Even back then people joined gangs to feel a sense of safety even though it was the total opposite. Gangs attacked people who ventured into their neighborhood and attacked, robbed or pick-pocketed them and more risking their life every time. After immigrants entered the United States more youth gangs were formed. The poorer neighborhoods have became a breeding ground for these gangs. . In the 1920's there was a decrease in gang activity. Many factors contributed to the decrease in gang activity, but the main reasons were the police put many gang leaders in prison, immigration started to slow down, and opportunities for better jobs allowed recent immigrants to move out of the slums to better neighborhoods. Today, we see an increase in gang activity. Some of these gangs are still running. we are seeing violence by large groups of teenagers that have joined together, sometimes not even knowing each other and a kind of mob psychology takes over, where there is sometimes a frenzy of violence. In 1989, a sixteen year old black youth was beaten by a gang with bats in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, when he went to purchase a car. In 1986, Howard Beach, Queens, eleven white youths beat and yelled racial epithets at two black men that had entered their neighborhood. One black was beaten by the group and the other was chased onto a highway were he was struck and killed. My point is gangs are very much alive and they will do anything to get what they were taught across. One big reason why these youths get caught up in this loop is to receive a sense of power but there are other ways then joining a gang.

Atomic Mass From Atomic Abundance Chemistry Problem

Atomic Mass From Atomic Abundance Chemistry Problem You may have noticed the atomic mass of an element isnt the same as the sum of the protons and neutrons of a single atom. This is because elements exist as multiple isotopes. While each atom of an element has the same number of protons, it can have a variable number of neutrons. The atomic mass on the periodic table is a weighted average of the atomic masses of atoms observed in all samples of that element. You can use the atomic abundance to calculate the atomic mass of any element sample if you know the percentage of each isotope. Atomic Abundance Example Chemistry Problem The element boron consists of two isotopes, 105B and 115B. Their masses, based on the carbon scale, are 10.01 and 11.01, respectively. The abundance of 105B is 20.0% and the abundance of 115B is 80.0%. What is the atomic mass of boron? Solution: The percentages of multiple isotopes must add up to 100%. Apply the following equation to the problem: atomic mass (atomic mass X1) Â · (% of X1)/100 (atomic mass X2) Â · (% of X2)/100 ...where X is an isotope of the element and % of X is the abundance of the isotope X. Substitute the values for boron in this equation: atomic mass of B (atomic mass of 105B Â · % of 105B/100) (atomic mass of 115B Â · % of 115B/100)atomic mass of B (10.01Â · 20.0/100) (11.01Â · 80.0/100)atomic mass of B 2.00 8.81atomic mass of B 10.81 Answer: The atomic mass of boron is 10.81. Note that this is the value listed in the periodic table for the atomic mass of boron. Although the atomic number of boron is 10, its atomic mass is nearer to 11 than to 10, reflecting the fact that the heavier isotope is more abundant than the lighter isotope. Why Arent Electrons Included? The number and mass of electrons is not included in an atomic mass calculation because the mass of the electron is infinitesimal compared to that of a proton or neutron. Basically, electrons dont significantly affect the mass of an atom.

Principles of Economics Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 7

Principles of Economics - Assignment Example This is because one will take more time looking for a parking space and the congestion in the parking area will create inconveniences. The opportunity cost is the cost of time taken to park that the students have to pay instead of engaging in other profitable activities. d) The opportunity cost of students with no employment is less than that of students with jobs earning 15 per hour. The students with no jobs are not forgoing any money as they take more time to park their cars as compared to before the price was lowered. To the contrary, those with jobs have to forgo the amount of cash they would have received if they worked those hours. b) The opportunity cost of 100 bats is 40 rackets that will be forgone if the country decides to add 100 bats more. Adding 100 bats will incorporate the resources that are usually used to produce the 40 rackets. The current resources can not be able to cater for the addition of 100 bats without decreasing the amount of rackets. Therefore, the rackets have to be produced less by 40. c) If the athletic country produces 300 bats and 300 rackets, the opportunity cost of additional 100 bats is 100 rackets. This is what is sacrificed to be able to produce the extra 100 bats. The resources will be reallocated to be used to produce the additional 100 bats. The resources have to be reallocated since they cannot cater for the additional bats. d) The additional production of 100 bats in part c will cause a greater trade off than the additional production of 100 bats in part b. This is because the opportunity cost increases as the goods produced increases. In b, 200 bats will be produced, while in c 400 bats will be produced. The gradient of the PPF becomes steeper as more bats are produced, showing a greater sacrifice in terms of rackets forgone. e) Suppose Athletic Country produces 200 bats and 200 rackets, 200

Legalization of marijuana Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1

Legalization of marijuana - Essay Example Despite the whole debate surrounding support for legalizing it, criticism over the effects or consequences emanating from its use has also been critical in the decision making process. In this regard, the decision of whether to legalize marijuana or not highly depends on the measure of whether there are more advantages or disadvantages of legalizing it. Earleywine (67) argued that although marijuana has medicinal value attached to it, many things have to be put into consideration when making the decision of whether to legalize it or not. Political, social economic and health issues are some of the facets to be considered when making the decision. In light of this, there are different tenets that have to be articulated upon to come up with sound decision. If marijuana is to be legalized, it translates to economic advantage to people that will be farming and retailing it. This is a great accomplishment as it translates to improved lives of the people to be involved in the business. In fact, the government will also have the opportunity of generating revenue from the tax collected from the marijuana business. People involved in the marijuana business will be better placed in taking care of their basic needs and other requirements such as their health, education as well as different development initiatives. In addition, if marijuana will be successfully legalized, the health sector will have a boost in terms of getting medicinal value from marijuana. In fact, health facilities will economically benefit from the drug especially from the money obtained from the sale of prescription marijuana. If marijuana is legalized, there will be a need to conduct extensive medicinal research to come up with appropriate prescription drugs from marijuana. Thus, many people involved in the research will equally benefit since this will act as a form of employment to them. On the other hand, people

Old Man and The Sea :: essays papers

Old Man and The Sea In the novel The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway uses the literary device of metaphors. Hemingway uses the metaphor of the ocean to symbolize life and to depict the role that individuals play in life. Hemingway uses the metaphor of the lions to signify people who live their lives as active participants. The tourists in the novel represent the individuals, who in observe their lives and are not active participants. In the novels that Ernest Hemingway writes, he uses metaphors to reflect his life experiences and opinions. The ocean in The Old Man and the Sea is a metaphor, which represents Hemingway's personel view of life. Hemingway believes that in life everyone must find their own niche and uses the metaphor of the ocean and the boats on it to demonstrate this. ...most of the boats were silent except for the dip of the oars. They spread apart after they were out of the mouth of the harbour and each one headed for the part of the ocean where he hoped to find fish. The old man knew he was going far out...1(page 22) Hemingway feels that in life there are people who participate in life and people who observe life as it passes just like on the ocean where there are boats that do not test their boundaries. The boats are the people in life, and most of the boats are silent. They paddle within the areas they know to be safe and always are cautious not to upset the life that they have established for themselves. Hemingway is explaining that most people don't raise a commotion, they just allow life to happen to them. The old man is testing his limits, he is challenging the ocean, and rowing where he wants to go not where the ocean wants to take him. Hemingway believes that in life, the farther person stays from the observers, the more free and exhilarated they will be. If there is a hurricane, you always see the signs of it in the sky for days ahead, if you are at sea. They do not see it ashore because they do not know what to look for, he thought. The land must make a difference too, in the shape of the clouds. But we have no hurricane coming now.2(page 51) Hemingway theorizes that in life there are going to be unexpected collisions. Just as the sea creates storms life creates storms. Those who live life to the fullest will be the least affected by these storms because they have the strength and the knowledge to handle them, but the observers or those on land will be destroyed because they do not have the power to handle the destruction that the storms will cause.

Marketing Introduction and Limatations Essay

Introduction In my assignment I will be writing about Two large business agency, Marks and Spencer’s, and British Heart foundation where I will explain about the different marketing techniques and strategies they use to undertake to promote their products and services. How they Brand their company and about relationship marketing. Marks& Spencer’s Marks and Spencer are a big franchise employing up to 78,000 employees worldwide but mostly in the UK. Marks and Spencer’s are one of UK’s leading retailers with annual sales of  £8 billion. They operate more than 450 stores in 30 countries, and serve tens of millions of customers every week. Marks and Spencer’s are only as strong as the communities in which they trade. They aim to please their customers and market in an easy and understandable manner. Marks and Spencer’s promote over thousands of products, from food to clothing, each product marketed in a different fashion. Marks and Spencer’s have used many strategies to survive the recession. Them being Growth, Branding, Survival and Relationship marketing. Survival Strategies They started by cutting jobs and closing stores. In January 2009 Marks & Spencer’s were planning to close 25 small simply food stores one being Croydon Valley retail store. They cut 780 jobs and 450 head office jobs. Sales plummeted in the 13 weeks leading up to December 27 2008, they fell by 7.1 %.Total sales fell 3.4 % in the UK. Other strategies they used to regain money were Pension cuts, Even though Marks and Spencer’s overall sales fell by 1.2% there was an international sales increase and online retail increase. The retailer made pension cuts to save the company  £175m –  £200million per annum. Chairman of Marks and Spencer’s Vandavelde (2009) gave a key speech on the recovery plan. â€Å"The previous plan was like feeding a tree that was already overgrown and unhealthy. What it really needed was serious pruning back. It had unproductive limbs that were hampering its growth and a lot of its best characteristics were lost in the foliage.† This is regarding the cuts that were being made. A strategy used by M&S is SWOT. SWOT is a method for analysing a business, its resources, and its environment. Marks and Spencer’s used the SWOT method for their food products. SWOT helped them discover: What the business does better than the competition. What competitors do better than the business? Whether the business is making the most of the opportunities available. How a business should respond to changes in its external environment. By using this method and braking down each sector they were able to research if there products would sell, and their competitors such as big organisations like Tesco would affect their up sales. Another strategy which Marks and Spencer’s use is known all the Boston Matrix. The main value for them using this is because it’s a useful tool for analysing product portfolio decisions. Constraints on survival strategies are the financial situation, resources and material. Cash flow is a common constraint to the sales systems. The financial constraint is usually internal. A resource constraint is also an internal limitation. Machinery, power and skills are some resources with constraints. Moving too slowly to get products to where they need to be is a internal constraint. Material is also a constrain due to where we are buying it from, are we paying for quality and receiving a product of quality or are we not spending enough to make sure our products are efficiently made? This is a external constraint. Relationship Marketing Relationship marketing has continued to evolve and move forward as technology opens more communication channels. This includes tools for managing relationships with customers which goes beyond simple customer services. They identify six markets which are connected to relationship marketing. They are: internal markets, supplier markets, recruitment markets, referral markets, influence markets, and customer markets. Relationship marketing is designed to develop strong connections with customers by providing them with information directly suited to their needs and interests and by promoting open communication. This approach is there for results in increased word of mouth activity. Marks and Spencer have created customer loyalty by launching different campaigns promoting different products which connect with each customer. They’ve launched fashion campaigns, food campaigns and an online clothes shop. Marks and Spencer’s have now become partners with Tesco for Fair Trade campaigns; they now have a range of electrical appliances on sale to comply with what their customers want. Marks and Spencer’s customers want to be able to rely on them to succeed and meet their needs as individual customers rather than a group. While Marks and Spencer’s have created a relationship with their buyers and are constantly researching too find out what their customers want more or less of, there are also constraints and limitations with doing so. A market constraint is external. Marks and Spencer’s competitors are always changing strategies and competing in new and better ways to try and come out on top. A question which is asked within big businesses such as M&S is, is the market demand for our products decreasing? This is an external constraint, if there’s no longer a demand for the product then their profit margin decreases. A decrease in sales = decreased profit. Benchmarking is a strategy that is used by M&S for marketing this involves looking outside the box to examine how other organisations are achieving their performance levels and to understand the processes they are using to be successful. In this way benchmarking helps explain the processes behind excellent performances. Although this strategy helps M&S stay ahead it can also bring them down as changing your outlook and ideas can be a constraint, Managing change is a common constraint. Markets are dynamic and always changing. Organisations work to stay ahead of markets and their leading competitiors. Knowledge could be an internal constraint to success, this could become critical if survival is at stake. Growth Strategies Marks and Spencer uses the Mckinsey Growth Matrix, to expand and grow their business. Instead of trying to find out how other business have grown, the Matrix strategy argues to grow on your own strengths. They have developed there growth strategies based on : Operational skills, Privileged assets, Growth skills and Special relationships. By growing based on these strategies M&S have been able to keep their customer loyalty but also have been able to increase their products and launch new promotions to engage new customers, by using different approaches they have a better change to widen their customer satisfaction. Some of these products can be sold to existing customers who may trust the business (and its brands) to deliver but new customers may need more persuasion. Even though M&S base their growth on their on development they do analyze their competitors. They use recorded dare, opportunistic date and observable date. * Recorded data: examples include competitor annual reports and product brochures. * Observable data: good example is competitor pricing. * Opportunistic data: to get hold of this kind of data requires a lot of planning and organisation. Marks and Spencer’s have grown as a company by producing a wide range of products, by up selling and engaging in customer loyalty. Strategies that have been used are the foundation of growing. They have focused their marketing and sales on a specific target market this has improved effectiveness and speed the learning process. Unfortunately a common constraint could be an unresponsive market. Marks and Spencer’s campaigns have reeled in more customers but buyer Motivation is a must in all businesses, companies can often fail to provide incentives to motivate their buyers to purchase. A constraint which can be avoided is the follow up after sale. Once a product has been bought research should be conducted to find feedback on that product and if theirs a chance of growth from that product. Branding The brand of a product is very important when making your decision weather to buy something. People buy branded names due to loyalty. Either they no the quality is good or the product is always going to taste good. For example; going to Tesco and having the choice to buy, 23p Tesco value beans or 63p Heinz beans. Just because it’s not a named brand doesn’t mean the quality isn’t as good, there’s just no risk. Trust is the most critical component in building and maintaining a strong, emotionally driven brand. Strategies used to introduce their brand to the public is media. By promoting their brands its then known by existing and new customers. Many businesses such as M*&S use celebrities in their campaigns this is to engage the buyers and also make them aware that a celebrity likes the brand. Limitations Legal constraints: Marks and Spencer may be constrained by a variety of licensure and other regulatory requirements, based on the industry and activities the business wants to pursue. For example M&S sell alcohol so they will need to have a alcohol license before they are permitted to sell any alcohol. Sales of goods act 1979, This act requires trader to sell goods that are described and are satisfactory. Marks and Spencer’s sell products to members there for the information stated should be accurate and not misleading. For example : selling food which states that there’s only 130 calories in it but really there 600. This is illegal. Voluntary Constraint This is where a company voluntary state that they won’t do something, or they always will. For example: Marks and Spencer’s have joined forces with Tesco to sell Fair trade products, and they are also recycling old clothes to Oxfam. These things do not have to be done but yet they do they do them anyway to give them a better reputation with the public. Pressure Pressure groups can be extremely effective in changing organisational behaviour.
